Baby on Board

Just because you are pregnant or have a little one doesn’t mean you have to postpone the family trip. Things will be different from the days of child-free vacations, but you can still have as much fun as you did before. Just keep these tips in mind.

Pregnancy

Pack lightly so that you don’t have to carry excessive weight. This will reduce your stress as you are hurrying through the airport or out to the rental car. Plan for more frequent rests and stops while pregnant and allow for this extra time in your schedule. Cut down on strenuous activities while you’re away. If you usually hike up to the top of the mountain on your yearly trip to Colorado, don’t push yourself to do it while pregnant. If in doubt, check with your physician.

Babies

Pack the diaper bag with necessary supplies such as diapers, clean clothes, wipes, and snacks. Also make sure you have plenty of sun protection for your little one because they are more susceptible to the sun’s rays the adults. If you are traveling by car, make sure the car seat is secure and in a safe place, rear-facing in the backseat.

Toddlers

New sights can be both exciting and frightening for a young child. Talk to your child before the trip so they’re aware of what will be happening and where you’re going. Give them something to do while traveling. Entertainment will take their minds off the act of traveling. Be open to the possibility that minor incidents will occur. Boredom, fear, and meltdowns are always a possibility, even under the best of circumstances.

Home Away From Home

To ease the transition, bring some loved items from home so that your child feels more secure. A cherished toy or blanket will lessen your child's stress. Try to keep a schedule smilar to the one you have at home. Children like routine and disturbing that routine can be detrimental. Have snacks and foods that they’re used to and try to find restaurants that will provide them with familiar foods.
