Car Trips

A car trip can be either the most fun you’ve ever had with your family or your worst nightmare. Plan ahead to make sure it’s not a disaster.

Packing

Make sure you pack the car in such a way that it doesn’t cause discomfort for the passengers. The last thing you want is for your children to be pressed between a piece of luggage and the window, begging to get out. Also, minimize what you carry. If you’re only going to be gone for a day, there’s no need to carry enough supplies for a week.

Snacking

Take along a picnic lunch or a cooler full of snacks. Being able to eat on the road will cut down on your travel time as well as save you money on those sudden stops for a candy bar. Supply healthy snacks and drinks for your children so they don't gorge on sugar-filled creations.

Mapping

Know where you’re going, what route you’ll take, and an estimate of how long it will take you to get there. Also, scout out some landmarks along your journey so that you can take detours if the mood strikes you. Always leave time for side trips because they often make the journey much more fun.

Entertaining

Supply your children with outlets for their energy. They’ll be stuck in a car during the journey, and you don’t want them to be bored. Allow them to bring one toy or game, a book, or some other novelty that will allow them to have fun while you drive. You can also make up a car game, such as counting the states on license tags or the colors of cars that go by their window.

Stopping

Plan ahead for where and when you want to stop. Allow everyone to get out and stretch their legs at certain times and take a bathroom break when needed. Plan where you’ll stop for the night if it’s a multi-day trip. Make reservations ahead of time so that you’re not left driving from town to town in order to find a vacancy.
