Medical Needs

We would like to believe that our trip will go off without incident. And that may well be true, but sometimes the unexpected happens, and you need to plan for that. When planning your family vacation, take both foreseeable and emergency medical needs under consideration.

Pre-Planned Needs

First, you should make sure that all the medicines you know you will need are available. If you take heart medication, make sure your prescription is filled and will cover the duration of your trip. If your child needs an asthma inhaler, make sure to pack extras in case one is lost. Always retain your doctor’s phone number, along with your pharmacist’s, so that you can quickly reach them if the need arises. If you need a prescription filled while away, these numbers can ease the process.

Minor Problems

Not every medical problem is life-threatening. You may catch a cold, your child may cut his finger, or someone may get a bug bite on your camping trip. A well-stocked first aid kit will allow you to take care of these minor problems without incurring extra expense. Be sure to go through the kit before you leave to make sure your supplies are adequate and have not expired.

More Serious Injuries

Accidents happen. While you can’t plan for them, you can be prepared in case they occur. Make a note of the area hospitals both near your destination and along your route. If you need to get off the road in a hurry, it helps to know the nearest medical facility. Carry your insurance card with you to speed up the paperwork. Be prepared to supply the hospital with your medical background as well as a way to communicate with your doctor.

Travel Insurance

Buying travel insurance is one way to address the cost of medical emergencies. These policies can cover medical needs either at home or abroad. Your insurance may not work in Paris, so be prepared to supply secondary coverage in case something happens. There are multiple companies that provide travel insurance so be sure to shop around to find the best option for you.
